Mount Usher Gardens
Revealed along the banks of the swift flowing River Vartry are the groves and glades of the world famous Mount Usher Gardens. This blaze of colour near Glendalough in the Wicklow Mountains is a collection of over 5,000 native, rare and unusual plants from around the globe and has been voted by the BBC’s Gardeners’ World Magazine as the best garden to visit in Ireland.
Instead of the formality of a ‘public park’ style design, Mount Usher follows the more laidback and natural manner of “Robinsonian” planning made popular in the 1860’s by Irishman William Robinson. Not just for avid gardeners’ or lovers of plants, peace and tranquillity are the hallmarks of this slice of serenity with 22 acres of planned walks and wild flower meadows and 5,000 species of plants, shrubs and trees.
Journey through this visual feast and consult the Tree Trail Guide to discover the nature and origins of the rare and exotic specimen trees and natural plantings that line this oasis of tranquillity. Wind your way to “hidden” cottage gardens, rest on a bench, gaze out at the stunning vista from one of the bridges or laze about on the lawns near one of the waterfalls. You’ll spot baby trout in the sparkling water of the river or swans resting on the lake, notice wonderful aromas of the surrounding flower beds and hear the sound of birdsong fill the air.
Feeling relaxed and in harmony with nature, head to the adjoining Avoca Garden Café. Savour the delights of creative fresh local food from one of Ireland’s best known artisan food producers or take away a sweet treat for your onward journey through the Wicklow Way. Here too you can browse the selection of quality outlets in the shopping courtyard, from garden related products to outdoor and equestrian clothing, furniture and photography, including:
- The Bakery selling food to go
- The Greenhouse plants and garden related products
- Strawbridge furniture and objects d’art
- Rhinestone – outdoor and equestrian clothing and related items
- Oska Ladies & Gents clothing
- Beatrix Photography
Mount Usher Gardens is a delight in any season. Wonderful, colourful and a place where design and nature come together in a real life portrait of beauty.
